What is the Interpersonal Wellness System?

The Interpersonal Wellness System Framework for Health Relationships at Work.

Imagine being in a relationship in which you feel fulfilled, happy, valued, and contented. Imagine that this relationship contributes to your emotional, mental, and spiritual wellness, and overall well-being.

As humans, we are relational beings. We thrive in healthy relationships. Our security, esteem, drive, and purpose are derived from the relationships in our lives. Human interpersonal relationships are intended to be the nucleus of well-being.

This is why we get sick when our relationships at work or at home are conflicted. We crave intimate, understanding and positive connections. In our quest for for this many of us settle for less than ideal relationships if they provide any form of human connection, even if they come with abusive.

For year, I struggled to help my clients see the connection between their relationships and their well-being. It wasn’t until I created the Interpersonal Wellness System in 2000 that I was able to give them a visual of how interconnected relationship was to well-being.

Today, the interpersonal wellness concept is the foundation of the work I now do. It is birthed from my original awareness and understanding of how interpersonal conflicts can negatively impact a person physically, spiritually and emotionally. As I explored this concept and began to pay more attention to what my clients were saying and demonstrating, I soon learned that our entire system is impacted by our relationships whether positive or negative.

From this understanding, I created the interpersonal wellness system to help my clients gain a similar level of insight into what was going on with their systems.

I then used the model to teach clients that their well-being is part of a system of interdependent and interrelated parts that directly impact the effectiveness and function of each other. The model below shows the nine wellness dimensions that make up this beautiful system.

This perspective of themselves as interrelated part raises awareness and heightens the individual’s responsibility to maintain the wellness and balance of the entire person, allowing them to maintain a higher level of wellness that can be seen and felt by those they interact with.

The Wellness Mindset Framework

Teaching the system of nine interconnected dimensions of wellness sets the tone for clients to develop a wellness mindset. It provided a visual context that allowed them to see themselves as able to measure their wellness in these nine dimensions.

The teaching demonstrates that to improve interpersonal wellness and create synergy, one must continually assess and develop in all nine dimensions, to be able to make a positive contribution to their broader interpersonal wellness network. It lends form the concept that we can only give from what we have, thus those who are not well in these areas are not able to contribute to the wellness of others. Like it or not, we are all connected and impacted by each other’s social vibrations good or bad, so the responsibility is on you to develop how well you are, so you can have a positive impact on me.

As time went on, I was able to develop the wellness assessment that allowed clients to assess how well they are doing in these life dimensions. Later we became aware of the nine wellness competencies that clients were developing to improve how well they are in each dimension. This led to what we now refer to as the Wellness Improvement System that forms the basis for the wellness mindset, assessment and wellness competency teaching.

As I continue to use this model with clients and to train other professionals in the use of this concept, I learned more about this wellness system approach. I later combined the teaching into the Wellness Competency Mindset Coach Training program which is an ICF approved coach training that trains coaches around the globe.

The Interpersonal Wellness System continues to serve as the backdrop for the Wellness Improvement System, the Wellness Assessment and the Wellness Competency Mindset Teaching, coaching and facilitator program. Most importantly, this concept is allowing me to give clients, employees and workplaces fast, effective and transformational results.
