08 Nov Are You Leading an Organization Through Transition?
For your organization to grow, be responsive to the market needs, and hold the ever-shrinking attention span of your current and future clients, you must keep changing. Change in technology, trends, and requirements occur daily; it is impossible for your business to stay the same and survive. You must change to keep up and thrive in this economy.
Behavioural Responses to Change
If you are you leading your team or organization through a change, then you must be dealing with many mixed emotions such as fear, anxiety, disconnect, pessimism, worry and high stress. These feelings will result in changes in behaviour and personality. I get calls from leaders at least once per week that someone’s behaviour has changed, another person on the team is not being themselves or is worrying another member of their team with their change in mood. This is a regular occurrence and expected as your organization and people transition through a change.
Biology of Change
Our primitive brain is designed to keep us safe and happy. In fact, our brain has mapped out our entire surroundings and have assessed every possible threat to our survival without any conscious effort on our part. This highly classified information is what alerts us to changes and awaken our senses to potential danger or threats to our safety or well-being. It is the reason we notice a stranger standing at the back door, it notices anything out of the ordinary. When we institute a change, our brain now needs to make sense of the new and map them as friend or foe.
Leading Through Change
When you are leading through change, it is vital to consider the biological responses, so you can adapt your conversation with your team or organization to stimulate curiosity instead of fear, optimism instead of pessimism, excitement instead of anxiety. The ability to change your conversation with those you lead will impact the energy of the group and the momentum for which to transition well through this change.
