How Leaders Lose Their Skills

How Leaders Lose Their Skills

Have You Seen This Trend in Your Workplace?

It’s funny how it happens more often than not. Many organizations spend thousands of dollars to train their leaders with no support in place to maintain their skills. As a result, many leaders stop using their hard-earned skills, and revert to using old limiting techniques because they lack the support and practice to continue their development.

Not only is it important for leaders to have access to ongoing support to keep developing their skills;  but also for the stress relief it offers. Many leaders tell me they get quite anxious when they think that they are failing. They want to do well, but don’t have a safe environment that is safe to practice, or receive growth enabling feedback and tips they can apply immediately to relieve the tension and frustration they are experiencing.. Leaders continually indicate that they feel better and less stressed when they are producing great results.

Since interpersonal stress at work, and a lack of opportunities for growth and development are key reasons today’s leaders site for leaving their previous employers; it is imperative your organization ensure that you continue to provide ongoing growth opportunities that meet the needs of a multi-generational leader needs.

Like any other skill, coaching is one that you will lose if you don’t use it. Ongoing coaching skills maintenance and development occurs when there is a structure for leaders to feel safe to say, “I’m stuck” here, or “I am not making progress there“, or “how can I say this and still practice coaching?”

As part of our Leadership Coaching Education Program, we have instituted our Leadership Coaching Bootcamp to help address this problem. Leaders get ongoing support, and a safe place to practice, brush up, refresh and revitalize their skills. They also learn new coaching tips to improve their success while they grow more comfortable with the coaching language and conversations. The first Leadership Bootcamp started two years ago as an extension of our coach training certification program, offering 1.5 credits towards a certification. These sessions are offered online for our global students, as well as in-person at our coaching institute on 845 Henderson Hwy for leaders who reside in Winnipeg.

Want to boost your skills, reduce stress and learn a new coaching framework to improve your team’s results? Join our next Leadership Coaching Bootcamp here.
